November newsletter xo

I like you.

Hello you fabulously supportive folks who opted into my monthly newsletter at some point! Look at me sending this only a month after the last as opposed to every 3-4 months.

First, I’m sorry if you’re receiving this twice! I just got a fancy new domain email “me@jennybruso.com” but the security on it is super tight, so things bounced the first time. AND I’m now using an actual mailing list. If you want to unsubscribe, for the love of god, please “unsubscribe” instead of marking it as spam. This happened a few times with my last email list, so it got shut down, which was a little bit crushing.

I know this time of year can be stressful for so many reasons: family, food & body stuff, being broke, bogus narratives about Indigenous folks, etc. I just want to say a few things:

1. You are exactly who you need to be right now. Maybe that will change later, but please give tenderness to who you are in this moment. Try to stay away from those tired old mindgames about starting your new diet or fitness routine on New Years Day. Don't bargain with yourself about what you eat now and how you'll make up for it later. And please do not comment on anyone's eating, food or bodies at your holiday events. It's a massive buzzkill.

2. "We can disagree and still love each other unless your disagreement is rooted in my oppression and denial of my humanity and right to exist." - James Baldwin –– carry this quote in your heart when dealing with conservative family members espousing dumb shit at the dinner table. The whole "we're all entitled to our own opinions" trap is a really easy way for people to feel entitled to saying harmful and dangerous things. If it is dangerous or otherwise not possible to speak up to a family member, remember, you do not have to endure it. Excuse yourself and move along, if you can.

3. Donate to an Indigenous group or initiative if you are able. Here are some I care a lot about:

New content:

Sisu Magazine: Ask Jenny Bruso #4 – fall 2019 – Dear Jenny Bruso, Instagram makes me feel really bad about myself. I think I need help, but I’m too embarrassed to talk to any of my close friends about it. My self-esteem is deeply affected by how well my posts do or don’t do. Worse, I feel like it’s having an effect on my outdoor life. While I’m trail running, I often think about Instagram...

She Explores Episode 133: All this Possibility - It feels major to be on She Explores a second time! This time I talked about my Salkantay Trek last summer, something that's been unimaginably hard to write about. Here's the first episode I was on if you'd like to listen to that, too: Episode 67: Fat & Outdoorsy.

If you'd like even more content from me, including more personal interaction, please join my Patreon. You can view it as buying me a cup of coffee once, twice, thrice a month. Plus you'll get PRIZES.

As always, you can find me all over the damn internet, for better and for worse, through the links in my signature below. I am most active on Instagram. Take care!
